More from Luke and Morse

Another cool video of Steve Lukather and Steve Morse jamming out to Little Wing. Morse solos in the first video, and it’s interesting to see his use of the volume control and pickup selections to get different sounds. Makes my usual theory of “put the volume on 10 and use the neck pickup for the solos” seem a little basic [superemotions file=”icon_lol.gif” title=”Laughing Out Loud”]

Next up (after young Ernie Ball does his bass solo) Lukather (after starting with “that lick” ;)) goes bananas:

Cool stuff!

Steve Morse, How’d You Play That?

Steve Morse explains a great little harmonic technique he uses to get a pedal steel type sound:

Forever Man (Clapton cover) with Raf

Raphael Fraser recorded a cover of Eric Clapton’s song Forever Man, and asked me to add some guitar solos to it (at around 1:16-1:44 and more in the outro as well).  Here’s the video on the YouTubes:

Interesting notes on the video (from me):

  • I make silly faces when I play the pentatonic scale apparently (see the middle solo, I contained myself, on purpose, on the outro one) [superemotions file=”icon_lol.gif” title=”Laughing Out Loud”]
  • Good backing vocals make a big difference
  • Occasionally I can play some semi-passable Clapton guitar licks!  All those years of playing Wonderful Tonight in my teenage years did some good.
  • If your Mac is about to crash, don’t record video on it…  The outro solo came out with 2 out of every 3 frames missing (not a scientific measurement by the way), so it looks like it’s in slow motion.  Raf applied a filter to make it look less obvious though.  Seems I should have used a PC instead 😉
  • My black Strat is a cool guitar.  There, I said it.  A 90’s Strat that sounds good (well, it does to me at least [superemotions file=”icon_razz.gif” title=”Razzberry”]) is not very common according to the limitless knowledge of people on the internet…
  • Sometimes you just can’t help but unleash the fury (see the half baked Yngwie lick in the outro for the lolz)

All in all, lots of fun and a good outcome I reckon.

Todd Duane Legato Jam

I was looking at some videos of Elmwood guitar amps, and came across this simply awesome bit of shredding by Todd Duane:

That is some nice legato right there folks [superemotions file=”icon_cool.gif” title=”Cool”]

Greg Howe Improvisation Lesson

A really nice video from Greg Howe talking about improvisation. I especially like the way he breaks down some of the thinking behind what he was playing.

Also, very interesting is that this video mentions the fact that Greg does online guitar lessons! Now that would be cool.

Steve Vai’s Top 10 Instrumentals

http://www.aolradioblog.com/2009/08/21/steve-vai-unveils-his-10-favorite-instrumentals/

Interesting list, embarasingly there are several tracks on there that I haven’t heard before [superemotions file=”icon_redface.gif” title=”Redfaced / Embarassed”]  I was thinking about what my top 10 would be, but most of them end up being Vai or Satriani songs [superemotions file=”icon_lol.gif” title=”Laughing Out Loud”]

I’d be considering such things as:

Always With Me, Always With You – Joe Satriani

For The Love Of God – Steve Vai

Apache – The Shadows

Walk Don’t Run – The Ventures

Friends – Joe Satriani

Cry For You – Andy Timmons

Eruption – Eddie Van Halen

Yngwie Malmsteen – Trilogy Suite Op. 5

Ahh, there’s too many good guitar instrumentals [superemotions file=”icon_cool.gif” title=”Cool”]
